USC has agreed to the largest higher education sex abuse payout in history. The $1.1 billion settlement was reached on March 25, 2021, following an $852 million settlement secured, in part, by Thomas A. Cifarelli and the Cifarelli Law Firm. This settlement is thought to be the largest in United States history, awarding more than 700 former USC students the justice they deserve following abuse at the hands of former doctor, George Tyndall. The Cifarelli Law Firm represented just over a dozen of Mr. Tyndall’s alleged victims. We are extremely proud to have played a part in this unprecedented settlement.
The $825 million settlement was recommended by Jeffrey Krivis and Superior Court Judge Daniel Buckley following their review of the evidence against Mr. Tyndall. The amount was unanimously approved by USC’s Board of Trustees.
In addition to this settlement, USC settled a class-action lawsuit in 2018 for $215 million. Around 50 other cases have been settled by USC for undisclosed amounts. The 74-year-old former doctor has been accused of countless sexual assaults, several resulting in criminal charges. Tyndall denies all charges, but USC has decided to settle multiple civil suits while he is awaiting trial due to overwhelming evidence.
